How to Wash Ajrakh, Bandhani and Hand-Block Cotton

How to Wash Ajrakh, Bandhani and Hand-Block Cotton

Hand-block and tie-dye textiles are dyed with natural or semi-natural colours, so they need a little more love than regular clothes. Follow these steps and your outfits will stay bright for years.

The first wash

  1. Wash separately in cold water. Add a spoon of salt or a little vinegar to help fix the colour.
  2. Do not soak for more than 5 minutes.
  3. Some colour may come out in the first two or three washes — this is normal for natural dyes.

Everyday care

  • Use a mild liquid detergent; avoid bleach and strong powders.
  • Hand wash or use the gentle cycle, turned inside out.
  • Dry in the shade — strong sun fades madder and indigo.
  • Iron on the reverse at medium heat.

Mirror work and embellishments

Outfits with mirror, cowrie or gota work should be hand washed gently or dry cleaned. Do not wring; press out water in a towel.

Storage

Store folded in a cotton bag, away from damp. Refold heavy lehengas every few months to avoid permanent creases.
